Twelve months, none of them tidy

Month lengths follow no pattern, four of the names carry the wrong numbers, and the leap year rule has an exception with its own exception. All of it is inherited from a Roman calendar that was patched rather than designed. Our notes cover the etymology, the mnemonics, the fiscal quarters and the date arithmetic that uneven months make awkward.
