Month lengths follow no pattern, four of the names carry the wrong numbers, and the leap year rule has an exception with its own exception. All of it is inherited from a Roman calendar that was patched rather than designed. How many days are in each month?

Seven months have 31 days, four have 30, and February has 28 or 29. The days-in-month page gives the exact figure for any year.

What month number is July?

Seven. The month numbers page lists all twelve with abbreviations and origins.

Why do some months have 31 days?

The pattern comes from the Roman calendar and its later adjustments, including the renaming of two months for Julius Caesar and Augustus, rather than from any systematic scheme.
